FIRST
® LEGO® League (FLL) is an exciting and innovative STEM challenge for teams of young people to encourage an interest in real world issues and develop key skills that are crucial for their future careers.

The challenge encourages a cross curricular approach using Programming and Control, Design and Technology, Mathematics, Research, Presentation Skills, Strategic Thinking and Teamwork to achieve the aims of the challenge.

Hear the educational benefit of FLL from TSM Roboteam, Trimley St Martins Primary School, Suffolk

Teams of up to 10 children, between 9 and 16 years of age, work in out of school clubs, as part of the curriculum or within a community group on all aspects of the challenge.  Participating teams across the UK and Ireland have 8-10 weeks from September to prepare for one of the regional tournament events.

As part of the challenge teams will:
·         Program a robot to complete tasks relating to the Challenge using LEGO® MINDSTORMS® technology.
·         Research and prepare a presentation on the annual theme

Winners of the regional events go through to the UK and Ireland National Final, where they compete for a place at the World Festival in St Louis, USA.

"The FLL Challenge goes from strength to strength.  We have been pleased to maintain our support.  The topical themes, and the obvious relevance to student's wider studies make this a great engineering related learning experience.  The format requires students to confront early many of the essentials for success in their working lives, for example, project management, problem analysis, effective distribution of tasks, presentation skills and, crucially, the need to work and succeed as a team.  We wish the FLL Challenge continued success."
David Cayton, Ford Motor Company
